Hair transplant in Caucasian

“Apart from the colour, do you think there are any other differences between Caucasian and Asian hair?”

From the view of a hair transplant surgeon, there are countless differences between the two. Other hair properties such as the size of the hair strand, the number of hair in a single follicle or even the average hair density are very different between each client. This results in the hair transplant procedure and graft management between Caucasian and Asian clients being different in their own special way.

Caucasian clients generally have shorter hair follicles and thinner hair calibre but have a much higher hair density and an increased hair count in a single follicle compared to an Asian client. The hair transplant surgeon will have to plan accordingly on how they will distribute the hair graft for the best scalp coverage from the limited amount of donor hair available.

In terms of hair colour, Caucasian hair is usually blond, red or brunette. The colour contrast between the different hair colour to the skin is much lower in Caucasian compared to Asian. The surgeon will have to adjust the density of the transplanted hair to ensure sufficient coverage of the scalp while being conservative to not use all the donor hair.

Due to the thinness of Caucasian hair, the punch size that the surgeon uses for graft harvesting can also be smaller compared to an Asian client. Smaller punch size will result in slightly smaller wound size and scar, leading to less bleeding and faster healing.

From our previous experience, the hairline preference between Asian and Caucasian male is also different. Asian client tends to prefer the straight hairline while Caucasian male prefer curvy hairline with a peak on the temporal areas for a masculine appearance.
